Some people just have a way with turning out the most scrumptious desserts. Shehari Goonesekara is one of them. Using recipes passed down from generations Sweet Sparkles by Shey is another one of those home bakers whose wares simply had us at the first bite.
What initially caught our eye was a Picnic Basket packed with goodies that was posted on their Instagram page and seeing just how cutely curated the basket was, we had to give it a try. Considering the fact that the cane basket has lots of glass jars, it was carefully delivered to us. Our order was placed during Christmas time so the basket came adorned in traditional red, green and gold, and a personal note as well. We got the kids involved in unboxing this massive “hamper” and boy did they have fun. Simply seeing so much yummy goodness in one place was enough to send them on a sugar rush!
The picnic basket contained three large glass bottles of 3 varieties of cookies (a dozen each) and two jars of Chocolate Mousse. The gift baskets were customizable with a choice of cookies but we were super stoked with our Mint Chocolate Chip, Red velvet with White Chocolate Glaze and the good ol’ Classic Chocolate Chip. But let’s talk about the silkiest, smoothest mousse we’ve had in ages. Shey’s version had a tinge of rose essence flavour and aroma to it which gave it all the more Christmas feels. Despite it being very heavy on the chocolate we couldn’t but help finish a jar in one sitting. Now, each jar is meant to be shared by two regular people. But then we aren’t regular people. We have dessert before mains at buffets, so don’t blame us!
Now to get to the Cookies. Our favourite hands down were the Mint Chocolate Chips. The cookies were actually green and the mint and chocolate flavours were perfectly balanced. Shey is also super generous with the amount of chips in each cookie and one does not need a magnifying glass to find a solitary chip like in some cookies. All three varieties were of the gooey kind and were simply melt in your mouth. We did feel however that the Red velvet could have tasted a little more like its original cake flavour. We also loved how the glass bottles can be reused (in fact they beautifully adorn our kitchen!) and the basket makes a nice addition to our home décor.
Overall Shey does a really good job with her desserts and confectionary and the mousse is certainly one we will be ordering again.
