  • A few weeks back a friend forwarded us a flyer about authentic Chinese dumplings and we got super excited. So excited that we placed an order immediately just to check if it was too good to be true, especially considering the price that was listed on the flyer. We were in for quite the surprise.

     

    Li’s Culinary Kitchen is run by Li Ping Hsu whose parents migrated to Sri Lanka. Learning the true art of Chinese cuisine from her mother’s kitchen, Li was inspired to bring some of her childhood favourites to every home. Together with her husband, Li’s Culinary Kitchen started off as a small home-based operation but in a few short months has grown to be loved by many.

     

    Our initial order consisted of two portions of Pot Stickers (dumplings that are steamed and then pan-fried) in both the Pork and Chicken varieties. Quite simply put, we loved them and our second order obviously had to include them. This time though we went for the classic steamed versions with a mix of Chicken and Prawn in one portion and Pork in another. For prices between 450-800 you get 08-12 dumplings and a classic dipping sauce which is the first wow factor as the dumplings itself are certainly value for money. Our Pork Dumplings came with a Li’s special Chilli Jam as well which right now is making my mouth water just thinking about it. That should tell you quite a bit about just how good it was. Do we have a preference when it comes to the dumplings? No, we just love all of them!

     

    Now Li not only does dumplings but has also used her Chinese roots and added a little bit of a local touch to some of her hometown hits. For instance Li does a mean Chinese set menu in Vegetarian, Chicken, Seafood and a mixed Seafood and Chicken pack as well. Being as indecisive as we are, we went with the fully loaded option and found at just 520 rupees the pack to be enough for two persons. Basically this pack has everything you would want in a good Chinese meal from the Veggie Chopsuey to everyone’s favourite HBC, Chilli Chicken, Jumbo Prawns and Chill Paste. What makes it different to all the other Chinese set menus on the market? The flavours. Li gets all her authentic Chinese sauces directly from Mainland China which makes a whole lot of difference in taste, aroma and colour of the food she presents.

     

    Not just sticking to Chinese food, Li has also ventured to try her hand at some favourite Italian dishes with a Sri Lankan touch. The creamy Chicken Pasta was also quite good with tons of flavour, healthy chunks of well-seasoned chicken and tons of Oregano.

     

    It is however the Dumplings that have won our hearts and the Dumplings that we will keep going back for. Also don’t be afraid to order because we noticed that the deliveries are done in temperature controlled delivery boxes that ensure your food gets to you nice and warm.
