  • Ko Roti

When it comes to family gatherings or friends hanging out at home one of the biggest dilemmas you are bound to face is what to eat. Cravings are a funny thing and amongst a group it can be polar opposites. So what do you do when someone wants Asian and the other person insists on having Indian or Italian for that matter? How does one satisfy all those hungry souls?

Being a veteran in Colombo’s food scene, the guys at Great Wall Chinese Restaurant came to understand this problem and took it upon themselves to find a solution. The result is Ko Rotti! With a play on the name of Sri Lanka’s endemic and favourite street food, Ko Rotti is in the simplest of terms fusion kottu. What’s so special about that you may ask? It’s the fact that these guys have combined some of the most notable “tastes” from around the world in to our familiar snack.

It all starts with the basic kottu rotti and the secret is in the sauces that are added on to make them great meals. The range spans from Biriyani to Nasi Goreng flavours and also pays tribute to traditional Thai dishes like the signature Green and Red Thai curries.

Ko Rotti for the moment is delivery only and your kottu comes delivered well-secured in foil boxes. The sauces are sent in separate containers while the elements like the boiled egg for the Biriyani and the fried one for the Nasi are not forgotten. Available on Uber Eats these guys also do their own delivery and are timely. This we believe also contributes to the fact that food is delivered fresh and warm.

Since there is quite a range we had to order all of it (and try a bite from each!) and here’s our verdict. We have two top favourites. The least of the two is the Thai Green Curry version. We love that the Green Curry sauce is the right Thai flavour and consistency and goes so well with the kottu. Our absolute favourite however was the simple Cheese Kottu. Now you may want to know what’s so extraordinary about that. It actually is in the way the kottu and cheese combination tastes. Presentation wise it looks more like a lasagne and there is a definite hint of Italian spices which makes it all the more so. So much cheesy goodness keeps the rotti, veggies and meat packed together and it feels like you are actually digging in to a pie and not a kottu.

We also love how generous Ko Rotti is with their meats. You will find nice chunks of the protein you choose in your kottu unlike most other places where you need a magnifying glass to locate it. Kudos to them for that too.

Overall Ko Rotti is a great discovery and we can imagine ourselves ordering from here quite often. Oh and we must mention that they are pretty reasonable in pricing too!
