More often than not, we find ourselves craving for good, homemade food. As much as we love the gourmet food from restaurants or the quick and easy fast food, there is nothing quite-like something that has been cooked at home with that special ingredient, a little bit of love. What started off as sharing that love with family and friends, soon became a thriving home-based kitchen that is the go-to place when you have your own cravings or need to entertain at home. This is the story of Hunger Squad.
Although Dilukshi spent many years in the corporate world she constantly found herself thinking this was not what she was meant to do. With a love for cooking instilled in her by her father, she eventually found herself cooking more and more often for family and friends. When the satisfied “customers” kept asking for more and word of mouth brought in more orders, Hunger Squad was birthed.
Hunger Squad as its name suggests is all about feeding the hungry. Dilukshi’s repertoire includes homemade favourites that have been passed on from generations and international favourites with a local twist. We’ve been following them on Instagram for a while now and were pretty impressed with the look of the food that was being posted. So we decided to finally place an order and see what it was all about.
Our order was delivered in time and came in foil boxes and a brown paper bags. We loved the personalized touch with the little note and smiley face as well. It’s always nice to see that people make an effort to be customer-focused and from what we hear Hunger Squad have a lot of repeat customers not just for their food but also for their customer experience.
So what did we get? Chicken Lasagne, Creamy Chicken and Mushroom Pasta, Honey Roast Chicken Drumsticks with Mash, Cheesy Garlic Bread and our favourite Chocolate Biscuit Pudding for dessert. Hunger Squad portions are quite generous and the single serving Lasagne was actually enough for two, as was the pasta. The Cheesy Garlic Bread had a nice layer of cheese on it and the Garlic flavours were well balanced and not too overpowering. We particularly liked the flavours of the Mash that came with the Chicken. It had a nice kick of spice and also some interesting herb flavours that complimented the sweetness of the chicken quite well.
The Pasta and Lasagne both were well executed in terms of keeping with the traditional recipes. The bolognaise sauce in the lasagne in particular was on point and was perfectly lathered in between the sheets. We would be partial to the Lasagne out of the two. Not that the pasta had anything wrong with it. In fact it had lots of chunks of chicken and button mushrooms swimming around in a cheesy sauce. But the Lasagne was simply better on the day.
CBP being our favourite dessert means we’ve tried plenty of varieties of them and are also quite sceptical when it comes to reviewing different variations. The Hunger Squad version used a more ganache-like cream instead of the usual butter cream versions, and we found it to be quite decadent. Being super rich you can’t really have more than a couple of bites.
Hunger Squad for us is one of those places that we will go to when we want to entertain at home but can’t be bothered with the cooking and washing up. It’s as good as or even better than a home cooked meal!
