If there is one thing that we Sri Lankans have adopted from watching too many Hollywood movies it’s a love for junk food. Hotdogs definitely top the list of favourites that have to be had at every sporting event, kid’s birthday party or just as an any-time-of-day snack. What we do lack in Sri Lanka though is a proper hot dog stand that does the classic all-Americans with the all the trimmings.
Star Dogs has possibly been the only hot dog stand to come close to attempting the feat and their outlets at Arpico Hyde Park Corner, Crescat Food Court and the Majestic City Food Court does quite a good job at satisfying sudden cravings. The fact that they have now partnered with delivery services means you can also enjoy your favourite hotdog from the comfort of home or office.
If you are shopping at Arpico and need to grab a bite the Star Dogs hotdogs are both a tasty and affordable option. Choosing the foot longs also makes these shareable and the kids are bound to love them. The only downside for us when visiting Star Dogs is wishing that the guys who man the stands would be just a little bit more cheerful when they go about preparing your dogs for you. We do understand that it must not be too fun a job to just sit there all day waiting for a hungry customer but trust us when we say, you might actually attract a few more if there was more cheer about the stand and staff as well.
The menu at Star Dogs is well-displayed and they have also recently added burgers to their repertoire to spice things up a bit. We still feel the reason you need to visit them is the dogs themselves but no harm in trying something new out.
At Star Dogs it’s all about the classic homemade sauces and we tried four different varieties with the Cheese & BBQ, Hot Butter Mustard, Brazilian and the Premium Hot Chilli. Each one has unique flavours and the trick is to also match it with the different types of sausages that are on offer. For instance if you are cheese crazy then, a Cheese and Onion Sausage topped with Cheese & BBQ sauce would be ideal. Of the four versions we ordered the Brazilian is definitely our favourite simply because of the freshness of the salsa and the zesty notes on the sauce. For extra heat you can always ask for a splash of the chilli sauces to be added on. This is one thing we like about Star Dogs as well when they oblige to mix and match.
We did order a Crispy Chicken Slopper from the new burgers menu but again think hot dogs should be the reason you revisit Star Dogs at any point. Like we said earlier, we would really like for these guys to take the whole hot dog stand scene a little more seriously and do something fun with not just the food but also the whole atmosphere of it all. Then you will definitely have us frequenting the stands.
