Colombo has long been this nation’s commercial capital with thousands flocking to the city daily for work. Today, however it is also a modern metropolis with urban living and tourist inflows ever-increasing. This is probably one of the reasons why you see so many food outlets of various cuisines being opened up daily. But sometimes it gets a little difficult to find our very own rice and curry among the plethora.
The Food Studio at One Galle Face mall aims to provide hungry locals and tourists with as many cuisine options as possible and have not forgotten to include traditional Sri Lankan food in the form of Jeewa’s. The all-day dining kiosk serves local favourites like Roast Paan with Pol Sambal and Curries, Pol Roti, String Hoppers and Hoppers with accompaniments, Rice n Curry and Kottu. There is also snacks like Achcharu and Short-Eats for the small hunger pangs.
Since we visited them during lunch time and their main item on the menu is the rice n curry we tried 3 different versions. Jeewa’s serves white, red and yellow rice with 3 choices of vegetables, a choice of mallung or salad and the must have papadam and fried chillies. Prices depend on whether you go vegetarian or have Chicken or Fish added on. We went with a vegetarian red rice, Chicken yellow rice and Fish white rice with the day’s veggies. The curries were freshly prepared, tasted good and is presented well too. The only qualm we had was that the rice to veggies ratio was heavy on the veggies side which though ideal for tourists may not satisfy a hungry local. We also do understand the price point, considering that this is the OGF Mall and what not but the prices of the accompaniments in case you want something extra just puts you off a tad bit and you may tend to settle for the basic rice n curry.
Despite whatever we have mentioned above Jeewa’s deserves a visit (or two!) whenever you feel like you need a quick Sri Lankan fix that is a little posher than the “bath kadey” down the road.
