The sweet smell of pancakes on a Saturday morning is a reminder of days gone by when life was simpler and the only problems you had was picking out which cartoon to watch. We all grew out of cartoons but pancakes may be not… To bring back all those childhood memories Caker St. is ready to satisfy pancake cravings any time of day.
It all started with Anjali and her husband who loved pancakes themselves and started experimenting with whatever was in their fridge as toppings. The fusions they created was soon adored by friends and family who would visit and encouraged the duo to start their own business.
While searching for the perfect name, Anjali’s love for Sherlock Holmes coupled with a pun on words gave birth to Caker St. For the moment delivering only through Uber these guys are all about pancakes with sweet and savoury toppings. Operating from 7am – 4pm Tuesday to Sunday ordering is a breeze and Anjali tells us that she’s built up a customer base that even has their pancake fix from them on a daily basis.
Once the order was placed, we were immediately surprised at the care taken for packaging. Most cafés that have pancakes on the menu deliver the toppings directly on the pancakes and what you get more often than not is a soggy, gooey mess. Not with Caker St. These guys send the elements in separate little containers so that you can assemble the pancakes and toppings any which way you please. Although this means a lot of plastic containers it avoids the mess and actually gives you a chance to properly enjoy the meal. We do hope Caker St. finds a more sustainable packaging option but for now we aren’t complaining.
Our actual order consisted of one from the savoury range and 5 different from the sweet range. Let’s get the savoury one out of the way. We had the Kochchi Pigs in a Blanket which is a localized twist of an old favourite. This one uses the more Asian version of the pancake better known as the crepe which wraps around either Chicken or Pork Kochchi Sausages. Served with Tomato Sauce the savoury versions come with two pancakes and is more of a Sausage Roll kind of ensemble. The highlight is that the pancake batter is also spiced to make it a more interesting flavour combination.
Of the sweet versions we ordered the Strawberry and Chilli Chocolate, Pineapple Caramel, Banana Pol Pani, Jaffa and Crunchy Kaya. A nice twist to the traditional Strawberry and Chocolate Sauce was the Chilli flakes added to the Chocolate and served with a Blob of Butter. The Banana and Pol Pani was the closest variant to what we are familiar with here on the tropical island. But it was the Pineapple Caramel that really took our breath away. The homemade Caramel Sauce combined with the Stewed Pineapple was simply amazing and gooey and sticky just the way we like it.
The Jaffa is another great combination of Orange and Chocolate. The pancake batter for these ones even have orange rind in them for the added crunch and citrusy kick as well. Crunchy Kaya was our other favourite. Now Kaya is a combination of sweet coconut and Pandan leaves all blended together originating from Malaysia. Pandan is an acquired taste but with the Coconut makes for a great topping. To add texture to this version, Caker St. adds caramelized, chilli spiced peanuts. The result is a myriad different flavours and textures in every bite. We simply loved it!
Each of the sweet versions comes with three very, very fluffy pancakes and make for a complete meal instead of an in-between snack. This is why we see ourselves ordering often.
