  • Take to Instagram these days and one realises just how many bakeries, cakeries and confectionaries have popped up in and around Colombo and of course the suburbs as well. While all of them have great food shots, not all can execute the look, taste and overall experience of a great piece of cake.

As its tagline goes, Ambrosia is all about presenting “a piece of Heaven” in every bite and we had heard many good things about the cakes that come out of this bakery prior to us actually paying them a visit. Elusively located down R G Senanayake Mawatha (Gregory’s Road for the old schoolers), Ambrosia has actually been operational many years prior to setting up shop there. The outlet itself is more of a convenient pick-up point for orders and also a welcome addition to the area that has a serious dearth of a good place to catch a quick bite.

A reputation that preceded our visit to the outlet was that of the quality of the cupcakes these guys do and also the extensive variety of flavours they deliver. Naturally we were inclined to try more than a few. Mint Chocolate Chip, Red and Blue Velvet, Ganache, Butter Rose, Chocolate Chip, Tiramisu, Strawberry and Nutella were among our choices and that alone was quite a myriad of flavours for our taste buds to handle. Because we are totally partial to anything that has Mint in it we have to give that our top pick. The mint flavour was definitely subtle and didn’t overpower the chocolate which is how we like it. Coming in second was definitely the Nutella which again was very subtle on the difference between everyone’s favourite chocolate spread and the actual cake itself. The Strawberry receives third place for its execution of flavours and the welcome bits of fresh fruit in the cake. If there was one we didn’t quite like, it was for some reason the Red and Blue Velvet which was rather bitter and didn’t quite bring out the Cream Cheese flavour in the frosting.

The cupcake repertoire at Ambrosia is also reasonably priced and the mini cakes themselves are quite large in comparison to competition. The fact that they also taste really great is an added bonus.

Our review would not be complete if we also didn’t sample some of the savouries on the Ambrosia menu and the Prawn and Mutton Rolls particularly took our fancy. Like we mentioned earlier, this area although a highly residential one with many schools as well has limited quick snack options and Ambrosia certainly delivers on price and variety. Their savouries have generous amounts of filling in them and aren’t miniscule like what you find at some of the more commercial bakeries so that’s a definite plus too.

To go with our spread of savouries and sweets we also ordered a Brownie Milkshake which was refreshing and full of bits of gooey brownie that made every sip worthwhile. This was definitely one of the better Brownie Shakes we have had in a while.

For those who prefer a heartier meal than just pastries, Ambrosia also has a limited albeit nice menu of pastas of which we tried the Spaghetti Bolognese and a Chicken and Mushroom Pasta. Both were cooked al dente and served warm. Our preference goes to the Bolognese which has great execution on the sauce and just the right ratio of meat and tomato puree.

Finishing off with another array of Ambrosia’s signature desserts we tried the Panna Cotta, Chocolate Biscuit Pudding, Dark Chocolate Mousse Cake and classic Caramel. To say the very least these didn’t quite live up to the expectations that the cupcakes set for us but we are partial to say the CBP was the best of the lot. The others while being good were just not great enough to really excite us.

We would definitely go back for another round of cupcakes to Ambrosia because that’s where we believe the real heaven is…
